Kitchen Project 210125
Customer request
I have recently purchased a newly built villa on Lake Como in which I will be moving with my family next autumn. One of our priorities is the design of a kitchen with an island in an open space: we will have to furnish a room measuring about 30 square metres, open to the living room but visually delimited both by transparent glass sliding walls and by a floor of light Emperador marble tiles. Our preference is for corner kitchens with a central island, all the more so if they are equipped with a cooker and a snack top where breakfast can be eaten. We love the modern style and, as the kitchen will be completely open, we would like to stay with a neutral colour palette. Among the materials we like are stainless steel and dark wood, and we prefer matt finishes over glossy ones. Our only need concerns electrical appliances: the composition will have to have two ovens and a module with an integrated dishwasher.
The walls are currently white and one wall is windowed. The floor has already been laid, as have the installations and a lowering of the ceiling in order to insert a hood and recessed spotlights.
Interior Designer's Comments
The customer purchased our Consultancy Service to furnish a modern made-to-measure corner kitchen complete with central island, an exclusive design composition combining Made in Italy quality, technical efficiency and maximum customisation of finishes. The actual design phase was preceded by an accurate study of the actual state of the room: the floor plan revealed a rectangular room measuring 28.5 square metres with two walls about 6x4.7 metres long, one of which is fitted with a large horizontal 3-door window, and two short walls designed to accommodate a system of dividing glass panels that can be opened by sliding on tracks. Starting from this layout, the interior designers created a large composition with base units, wall units, worktop and, in the centre of the room, anisland equipped with an induction hob and snack counter.
Considering the shape of the room and the water and electricity connections, the Interior Designers opted to divide the functional areas as follows: a washing area on the smaller wall; a work and storage area on the larger wall; an area dedicated to cooking and eating meals at the island. This arrangement, which was considered the best in terms of optimisation of space and ergonomics of movement, fully reflects the design concept of the villa: to create a fluid and dynamic domestic environment, closely connected both with the rest of the home and with the views overlooking the lake landscape.
Starting from the left, the composition houses a base unit with 60 cm doors, a 60 cm dishwasher base unit, a 120 cm under-sink base unit and a 105 cm corner unit equipped with two 45 cm doors. While, on the one hand, the presence of the window has resulted in the absence of wall elements, this portion of the kitchen without wall units can count on a generous amount of floor-standing storage units and a long steel corner top with splashback and integrated sink installed under the window. Food preparation and dishwashing can be carried out while enjoying the natural light from the window and the change of air provided by the three doors.
To the right of the sink, continue towards the corner and then proceed along the larger wall. Considering the measurements taken from the plan and the customer's wishes, the furnishers opted for an articulated composition with a corner module, five 60 cm base units, two oven tall units and a tall unit with integrated refrigerator. Above the top there is a composition of shelves with a back panel to be used as a display unit, five wall units and a steel protection panel. The decision to vary the storage proposals has both aesthetic and practical purposes: the coexistence of open modules and closed compartments not only adds an asymmetrical element of dynamism, but also allows utensils, accessories or ingredients to be organised according to daily needs or frequency of use.
The wall configuration of the corner kitchen left ample space for the installation of afree-standing island of considerable size (240x155 cm) in the middle of the room. The island consists of a combination of base units with doors and drawers, a steel top with matching sides and a state-of-the-art induction hob. The cooking area is served by a scenic designer hood and can become, depending on the time of day, a practical snack counter for quick meals, breakfasts or entertaining guests on convivial occasions. The project included the insertion of three high stools with backrests and footrests to ensure optimal comfort while eating.
The design of this large modern kitchen island paid particular attention to the choice of materials, carefully selected to combine elegance, practicality, durability and high performance. In the choice phase, sliding glass walls were taken into account, a dividing element that allows the room to be closed and delimited without hiding it from view.
As requested, clear finishes predominate in the design, represented by the natural ash-coloured Cement of the island, columns and base units and illuminated by the metallic appearance of thestainless steel of the tops, hood, appliances and plinths. The palette is counterbalanced byThermo Treated Oak, a wood effect with dark tones used only in the wall units to create a sharp but refined colour contrast. The accent touch is provided by the stools upholstered in Papaya orange leather, a trendy colour that lends itself to an interesting combination with the Wenge wood structure of the seats.
